KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS RAISING BIG WARFUiD That the Catholic societies are j not behind other patriotic audi philanthropic organizations in loyalty and humanitarianism was ; shownlast Sunday when at a reg j ular meeting of Heppner Divis- j ion Ancient Order of Hibernians, j a committee was appointed, com- j posed of F. A. McMenamin, Michael Kenny, M. L. C'urran and f at Lonnell. to solicit tunas from the people of M irrow coun ty for the Knights of Columbus War Fund for the benefit of A- merican soldiers and sailors. The Knights of Columbus are particularly fitted for this work after having established and maintained to recreation centers , on the Mexican border last year for the benefit of the National Guardsmen stationed there. For this work they recieved the high est commendation of the milita ry authorities. The K. of C. has been desig nated by the War Department as the official agency for all Catho lic activities among our soldiers I and sailors as the Y.M.C.A. has been so designated as the official agency for all Protestant activi ties. Both organizations have been granted equal privilcdges by the government each being permitted to buy lumber and oth er supplies from the government;"11" I"" I'"" ""' mhis as he at government prices. Both or ganizations furnish recreation centers for all, regardless of re ligious belief, and their work is performed overseas as we home. as al The Knights of Columbvs have started a campaign to raise $.;. 000,000 for the purpose, among other things of taking care of the religious needs of Catholics w ho number about 10 percent of thejmen in the service. At the Hibernian meeting Sun- 'day, altho many of the memlcrs present are members of theK. of C. and had already paid their pir capita tax, by which $1,0Iii,himi has already been raised, titer stirinsp wns ceiieniiis !.iw in a . short time an amount running to the hundreds was sulisci ibi d. Gentry, well known Hin ton crook sheepman, lo st approx imately 500 head of sheep this work presumably from lupine poisoning. The band of about 1 100 head were brought from the mountains recently and turned on the winter range and within a short time they began to die by scores. The lupine plant is common on many of the ranges of this sec tion and the fact that only in oc casional cases does it appear to prove harmful to the sheep makes its workings somewhat mysterious and difficult for the stockmen to account for. There seems to ho no remedy for the trouble once it. attacks an animal. Mr. Gentry's sheep were mostl young ewes, valued at from $8 to 120 per head thus causing a loss close to i0,000.00. A 1 o :; A 1 ; i' mi 1 11 i 1.1I J Word has just been received Jhere, at noon Friday, that the J Highway engineers have an Jnounced the selection of the J Heppner Junction route for J I he State Highway. A party of Morrow Count v boosters consisting of Charles Thomson, Harold Cohn, J. L. Wilkins, P. J. O.Rourkeand Em met Cochran, of Heppner; Bert Maso.i, Dr. Chick andChasSper ry, of lone; C. A. Minor, Jack Hynd and Mr. llendricksen, of Cecil, went to Arlington Tuesday to confer with Gilliam county cit izens regarding the location of the State Highway from a point near Morgan to the Columbia Highwav and the river. Two routes were discussed . the tinit to follow a water grade down Willow creek to Heppner Junc tion, the oilier to cross the divide from Morgan to Arlington. Gilliam county is interested in i he projected road for the reason that no matter which route is se lected the road will enter Gilliam several miles from the river and and the expense of preparing the roadbed must be born hy that county. At the Arlington conference Tuesday the Morrow county del egation stood as a unit for thd water level Heppner J ti n c tio n route while the Gilliam county contingent was equally united in contending for the Arlington route the result being a deadlock. it being finally decided to tint the matter of location up to the County Courts of the two conn ties. Wednesday Judge Patter son took the matter up with Judge Parnifin, of tiilliani conn tv, but wit limit, other result, than an agreement, to pass the whole matter of location up to M. ().
